Weber charcoal grill. I have gas, for convenience, but my dad (a bbq expert!) swears by charcoal. He has both, a smoker, AND a Big Green Egg.

Propane. Charcoal is great if you have time and want to be a "bbq master" but it's not convenient for time or heat consistency. More work than its worth. Say you have a party and you grill then decide later you want to do more; your coals have cooled and you have to go through all the motions again. I have both and grill at least 3 times a week nearly year round. I only use the coal when I want a desired result.

I've gone both routes, I owned a Big Green Egg and now own a mucccch cheaper gas grill. While the Egg is truly what you want if you are an aficionado, or simply just love to cook, gas is so much more simpler. I found the number of times I put meat in the broiler to cook within my timeframe as opposed to firing up my Egg to be increasing over time. I loved it when I actually used it but I use my gas grill far more because I just turn it on and go.

^ Big Green Egg produces some amazing slow cooked bbq pork butts and beef brisket. Those are the things that gas can't do.

Charcoal for me, but gas is a lot quicker. Usually devote 15-30 minutes for coals to heat up, depending on amount used.

              You should eventually get both.

Gas/Weber. I have a propane line hookup for my grill so I never have to worry about getting a tank filed. Love my Weber grill.

Love my Weber. I have the Weber kettle and hope to get this soon Home - Smokenator 1000, basically makes it a smoker. Can't wait to smoke some ribs.

I would suggest you go with a cheaper brand, use it for a couple years and see if its something you want to really spend money on. If so, then go with the weber.

As everyone else has said, charcoal is without a doubt best for taste but gas is just so much easier and the reason I use it.
