I can't really see how getting an electric at this time can be anything other than a 2nd "around town" car, unless all your trips are less than 50 miles. The infrastructure for long distance driving doesn't exist afaik. Maybe in a few years.... but there's no question it's coming. The DOE is putting a lot of money into battery research - hope some of it pans out and we make a breakthrough there. That's what's holding things up. If we can get a battery that can do a few hundred miles between charges and we have a battery swap infrastructure that will give you a fresh battery in the same time that it takes to fill up a tank of gas, I think electrics will take off.

The real game changer comes when that kind of range can be achieved at a price at or under 35k. Preferably a much faster recharge rate as well. The day will come when recharging the battery is close to as fast as filling up your gas tank. I predict it will be 5-7 years from now.
