Totally missing the point. Forget about humans driving. We are idiots and we make mistakes all the time.

This is about a machine/computer making this decision. That kind of tech is absolutely here and will be a common thing very soon.

This is not a debate over humans vs AI or self driving cars. It's a debate about what the self driving car will do and how it will make decisions in those unforeseen circumstances.

And I'm saying that it's not any different than the way things are now. Just a different way things will never be perfect but they could be better.

My guess is the auto drive will not be enabled in residential areas. Or until tech is installed that doesn't allow the car to reach pedestrian areas in an accident. Something like magnatism.

We aren't even talking about the same thing. How is it not any different than it is now?!? Humans drive cars now. I'm talking about the decisions an AI will have to make. These are 2 different discussions all together.

Your saying "ehh we have all kinds of human accidents now so whats the difference". If you cant see the difference in what I'm saying as compared to what you are saying then I don't know what to tell you..

Your talking about the irobot situation of will Smith being saved instead of the kid. I get it.

But we are getting ahead of ourselves suggesting that we will be so advanced in where this AI will be used but nothing else around that AI has advanced.

AI vs a computer running calculated models is very different. Either we can program into it to swerve away from the smaller people given the choice, and so on, or it won't be implemented.

F1 cars break apart because they are made of carbon fiber but that does not mean that you would survive the G force of a head on collision at a certain speed.

You're trying to break the argument instead of addressing the issue. It would be ignorant to assume that there will not be unavoidable accidents where the car is faced with a split second decision that will take or save lives.

Why do you get to be the decider of all the factors in the hypothetical scenario??

Because I'm the one laying out the scenario. Lets imagine my scenario happens. That's the point. You can't explain it away by changing the scenario.

What happened to you thinking on a higher level instead of just inside the box handed to you? :D

I understand YOU are the one stating the scenario but TKD added some additional rational things to think about.

But back to YOUR scenario -- is it more or less, who gets to "program" the car? Do the manufacturers decide on head on collision vs pedestrian or do we? Will it be a numbers game? 1 driver vs 5 pedestrians = pedestrian always wins?

I'm the one handing you guys the box by starting the thread. Your all trying to change the ingredients inside the box rather then addressing the issues I'm laying out!
