Only idiots go to India in summer. Rajasthan is a magical place in winter.

It's not for everyone. I know a lot of people who have been mesmerized by the place, and others who say they'll never go again. It all depends on what you want to get out of it and what your expectations are.

I was just kidding. There's a lot of the country I have never seen myself. I am used to the place. I can blend in, pretty much "go native" if you know what I mean. And my expectations, both good and bad, are tempered by my familiarity to the place. You have to have a different frame of mind to ENJOY India. You have to really get out of the airconditioned 5-star hotels and rough it. It's not for everyone. But if you are willing to do that, it will be an enriching experience.

What do you guys think about global warming as the cause of this? Their previous record high was 50.6C (123 F) in 1956

A contributor without any doubt. If you look at a global temperature graph, there are peaks and valleys of course, but the overall trend is steadily upward. The outlook is bleak. I saw a recent study that predicts a 3-10m sea level rise (can't remember the exact number) by 2050. In fact, the overwhelming consensus is that scientists have been UNDERREPORTING temp and sea level rise predictions because of political pressure. The reality is almost certainly going to be worse than the predictions.

By the way Red, the Great Barrier Reef looks to be in serious trouble. Damn, looks like it might be mostly gone before I have had a chance to travel there. I'm surprised I haven't heard more noise from the Aussies about climate change, but maybe it just didn't get to my neck of the woods.

Thing is, global warming isn't anything new. Humans talk about it as if it's the first of its kind. The earth goes through warming and cooling cycles. Dinosaurs lived on a warmer earth than we have today. Fast forward millions of years and we have the ice age which was obviously a much colder earth.

Not sure why people don't talk about this when they mention "global warming" as if it's something totally created by man and completely unnatural. If anything we may have sped up the process by some years but it would happen regardless.

This is simply the first time modern civilization has lived through a warming event. The earth will continue to go through cooling and warming cycles without regard to human presence. I think humans in general tend to imagine we are bigger than we actually are.

With that said, we could certainly do a much better job at taking care of our planet, cleaning up after ourselves, and becoming far more efficient with enrergy and waste.

Yeh the great barrier reef is f'ed from coral bleaching from rising sea temperatures. I had to write about it afew years ago. It's just astonishing there are people who doubt it global warming.

There is a huge amount of noise regarding climate change here.
