the question for me is why would they make it up? what's the incentive?
i can see however the incentive for Brazil to say it's all BS. because it proves the stereotypical "Brazil is dangerous don't go there" and the gov doesn't want that.

Attention, fun, thought it go away, who knows why people do certain things like that. Let's hope he is telling the truth, because right now the cards are stacked against all of them.
Too many inconsistencies in his and their story, video angles, etc.
American Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte fabricated a story about being robbed at gunpoint in Rio de Janeiro, a Brazilian police official told The Associated Press on Thursday.
The official, who has direct knowledge of the investigation, spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak about an ongoing probe.
He said that around 6 a.m. on Sunday, Lochte, along with fellow swimmers Jack Conger, Gunnar Bentz and Jimmy Feigen, stopped at a gas station in Barra da Tijuca, a suburb of Rio where many Olympic venues are located. One of the swimmers tried to open the door of an outside bathroom. It was locked.
The official said a few of the swimmers then pushed on the door and broke it. A security guard appeared and confronted them.
The guard was armed with a pistol, but he never took it out or pointed it at the swimmers, the official said.
According to the official, the gas station manager then arrived.
Using a customer to translate, the manager asked the swimmers to pay for the broken door. The official says after a discussion, they did pay him an unknown amount of money and left.
Lochte, what a goofball. 32 years old and acting like a 17yo kid. He skipped town but the other guys will be lucky to escape without getting the book thrown at them. Now nobody is going to believe the gringo who really gets mugged.
Lochte, who departed Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday and was safely in the United States, according to his attorney, said as recently as Wednesday night, in an off-camera interview with NBC’s Matt Lauer, that he stood by his original story.
“I wouldn’t make up a story like this nor would the others — as a matter of fact we all feel it makes us look bad,” Lochte said, according to Lauer’s account of his interview. “We’re victims in this, and we’re happy that we’re safe.”
Its in all likelihood Lochte's last Olympics and probably his last event in international competition and this is what his legacy will be. Pretty damn foolish. Like a damn foolish teenager was mentioned, that sums it up pretty good.
