  • prednisone weight gain?

    First post here.
    I have a simple question...
I have been put on a low dose of Prednisone of 10mg.
I have been on it for about a week and Feel like a have gained about 5 pounds of water.
I feel sluggish. I lift 3 times a week but still fairly new.
I have been lifting and trying to eat right since Aug. last year.
before my weight was around 170lbs and I am 5'10".
but since I have been on the meds I am at 177lbs in just a week.
Is this common and how hard is it going to be to lose it when I get off.
I drink about a gallon of water day no soda. I also have been taking in the recommended protein intake of 1 gram per body weight. Low carbs.
    Thanks

I've taken it before for broncitis and that is one of the side effects. It made me swell up like crazy. My joints even hurt so bad I couldn't walk.

So how long did it take before you were back to normal?
      Thanks

If I am not mistaken I thought that prednisone actually deteriorates muscle. So weight gain would probably be from water.

Yes, it is the most common side effect.

          Why are you taking it?

Doctor, obviously using this for some type of therapeutic purpose, he should have informed you of such thing and his plan for how long you will take it, and for getting you off.

Overall it's not something to be on a long time.

It took about three days for me to get back to normal...The swelling really, really hurt. I could hardly walk!

This is a normal, but unfortunate side effect of prednisone. your body should return to normal within several days to weeks upon dicontinued use for most individuals.

                Thanks for the info.
I got put on it for swelling from burns to my legs.
Nothing real bad just hurts and peelin.
So I should be back to new a a month or so.
                Thanks again.

It is normal to puff up. One of the side effects is called "moon face" if you can believe that. Just make sure you taper off it as I am sure your physician has told you. Your body needs to adjust gradually.
