he already has the referral to see a certain kind of specialist. there is more then 1 of that kind of specialist on his insurance plan. the doctor cannot dictate who you see. all he has to do is tell his doctors office to write the referral to the specialist that he chooses.

a primary care doctor cannot force you to see one specialist over another if they both specialize in the same thing and one has an opening sooner then the other.

correct. and all he has to do is call his primary and tell him he found a specialist who has an opening in 10 days and he would rather go there. he would have the new referral that day. thus my point of not waiting around.

i have had the experience many times from the other side. i have gone through the process of being sent to a specialist from my primary only to be told it will be 3 weeks when i make the appointment.

i simply went on my insurance company website. found the specialist i needed in the list for my area. found one that had a wait of 6 days. called my primary, told them to change the referral over and made the appointment that day.

i have done that maybe 5 or 6 times in 2 years.

Well obviously bro, I would do the quickest route; no doubt....But this is really where it ALL FALLS DOWN...The DOCTOR....End of story.

Some Dr's go over and beyond and some just go at a pace....If I was him, I would said fuck off and I'm finding a new PCP; which I need no permission to do that....I just choose my new PCP and go from there...I've just been lucky with all of my Dr's that when I need something, boom..Done...

its not going above and beyond to change a referral. its a job they have to do if the patient requests it.

yes but you guys seem to think its up to your primary to find you your specialist. once again, they will simply give you the closest one and thats that. its up to you to go find a specialist that you want. once you have found them, then you call the primary and get the referral to said place.

this is exactly the situation I am in - I need the referral or it's not going to happen, B - I was on the phone for plenty long today, it's not like I enjoy being in this condition bro. I don't think you understand the way MA is now w/masshealth and that whole deal - people are crawling out of the woodworks to get everything and anything done.

Your PCP tells what specialist to see; period...It's not up to the patient to find the specialist....Man you can be so fucking dumb bro...

ONCE AGAIN. they find you a specialist. usually the closest one.

IF YOU WANT TO USE A DIFFERENT SPECIALIST IN THE SAME FIELD AND THEY HAVE AN OPENING BEFORE THE OTHER SPECIALIST YOU HAVE EVERY RIGHT TO GO THERE. THE PRIMARY WILL GLADLY CHANGE THE REFERRAL.

I UNDERSTAND YOU NEED A REFERRAL. i never said you didnt.

BUT. there are other specialist that specialize in what you need under your insurance plan. you can view them easily on your insurance companys website.

if any of them have an opening much sooner then your other guy you simply call your primary care office and change the referral.
