An international research team gave 320 men ages 18 to 45 two shots of a progesterone (the female hormone) mixed with testosterone (the male hormone) every eight weeks to reduce their sperm count until they were made more or less infertile. After six months, when sperm counts dropped below a million, the couples relied solely on the shots for birth control for up to 56 weeks. And in that time, only four pregnancies occurred in the 274 couples that completed the study.
But there are a couple of kinks to work out. The study had to be stopped early because of the high rate of side effects in the men, particularly depression and mood disorders. The male patients also complained of an increased sex drive, acne, muscle aches and pain at the injection site.
