  • Post workout shake with water or milk?

I have been making all my protein shakes with milk as I get an extra 9-10g of protein that way.

I have however read that milk can slow down absorption of whey protein and therefore post-workout shakes should be made with water so that they can be absorbed faster and presumably begin the muscle repair process sooner.

Is there truth to this, or is it just bs? I certainly want to help muscle rebuilding, but I would really like to keep the extra protein that milk provides. Being a vegetarian, I am constantly fighting to keep my protein intake high enough.

Plus, protein shakes with milk taste so much better than with water.

you should have a shake with some simple carbs like dextrose with whey protein and water.

I will take straight after work out 0.5g per KG of body weight of simple carbs eg. grape juice. And after 30min have your full meal. You can also add BCAA after work out and before if you want to.

I am drinking mine as we speak, mixed with a little grapefruit and OJ. With the vanilla protein it kinda tastes more like a smoothy. Simple carbs are excellent post workout, namely dextrose. Grape juice and other fruit juices have sucrose which replaces liver glycogen levels as opposed to dextrose that replaces muscle glycogen levels (what we as bodybuilders want). The protein mix I have already is premixed with dextrose, so I figure the extra carbs won't kill me. Hope that made sense and helped.

No issues with my protein powder taste - I use Pro-rated Chocolate from Costco - 5lb for 20 bucks. Tastes pretty good.

I am getting a bit tired of chocolate though - I took the advice from someone in these forums and got some ON 100% Whey in strawberry flavor.. boy, I can't stand the taste!

I love strawberry - does anyone make decent strawberry-flavored protein drinks?

Don't get body fortress thats all I say...... Why don't you try adding other stuff to it to try and spruce it up a little and get rid of that awful taste.... I add egg, yoghurt, banana etc to my milkshake, seems to work.....

I use skim milk..doesn't slow it down that much...and the steady release of protein might be a good thing...keeps levels from spiking up and down too much.
