  • Protein deprivation

My wife is dragging me out on a backpacking weekend tonight. That's fine except that I have had an awesome week lifting and feel like my recovery/hypertrophy will be hurt by the potential lack of protein I could experience this weekend. What do you guys carry with you when you have no way of refrigerating most protein products? It needs to be easy with no particular utensils/kitchen appliances required. The only things I've thought of that would be practical are the aluminum packets of tuna and maybe some jerky (but that has too much sodium to be practical for multiple meals). Any other ideas...?

How about some whey? Peanut butter is ok. Maybe some alpo? LOL.

you'll live bro, just enjoy yourself. i think the tuna in the packets may be easier to bring because you don't have to drain the shit and carry a can opener. Bring a can of almonds and a bunch of whey and you'll be money.

I know I'll live but I hate doing excessive cardio--even though it's light cardio w/o eating enough. I feel like I'm gonna lose mass, which probably isn't very possible over two days--but I hate the thought anyway.

I guess I'll go buy tuna pouches, dried fruit and nuts--and maybe bring some protein powder. Maybe some PB sandwiches would be a decent snack.

Dont underestimate carbs!! When you are hiking, carbs are just as important, if not more important, then protein. Take lots of trail mix, mixed nuts, dried fruit, that sort of stuff.

I saw the Oh Yeah bars today at a gym I was working out at--19gms of fat!!
The other problem is that most bars have that fake chocolate coating that melts and gets to be a mess in the heat. Clif Bars are one of the only ones that are OK at any temperature--and they finally came out with a high-protein version!

If you are going to cook things like pasta, you can take along some textured vegetable protein (TVP) and add it to whatever you are cooking. I use it all the time, and my friends have told me that it has the flavor/consistency of ground meat.

Tryoplex bars will stay good and have plenty of protein. Also, you can stick a couple scoops of whey combined with some pb in the microwave (add oats for some texture) with a little bit of water nuke it for 20 seconds and you'll have a nice little protein biscuit. Yeah it will get dry, but hey - its edible. You can also buy canned chicken at the grocery store Doesn't taste bad at all, and it doesn't have to be refrigerated.

I threatened that several times this weekend! I got by with jerky, tuna packets, a couple VPX Micellean MRP shakes and more tuna packets! She kept complaining about the tuna, so I told her the options (she knows I was kidding, ...kinda). I've had enough tuna for awhile though.
