  • GMO foods are safe to eat, but they pose challenges in the environment.

Many aspects of modern technology make people a bit uneasy, but genetically modified foods may be in a class by themselves. Labs all around the world make genetic modifications of organisms—bacteria, plants, and animals—365 days a year. And some of the results of that work have been ingested by humans for years, often in the form of life-saving drugs. But genetically modified crops remain controversial around the globe, and while they're commonly used in the US, they have almost no presence in the European market.

I try to buy organic everything. I read that GMO's have insectiside Bt built right into the foods. This increases a crops yeild and saves the cost of have to pay someone to spray the crop. Bt sprayed on the food is not a problem cause it gets washed off but when its built into the food you cant get rid of it at all. What this leads to is injestion of this insectiside Bt which get into the intestanle tract. I then read that the IF the body is fighting a virus, the Bt is preventing the medicine from killing the virus. This can lead to a superbug.

I also read that GMO's are connected to a host of other ailments, ex alergies and birth defects. Personally i believe its gonna be one of things, everything in moderation but I do think that all the weird ailments and cancer that people are getting these days is connected to the crazy stuff people are eating.

Good read...but I just keep coming back to the many times in U.S. history where the government and government supported science has said "Yaaaa this is perfectly safe! Go ahead!!" Only to have their ass slap shut 15 years later when science showed it was deadly to you. DDT, and smoking come to mind. At one point doctors prescribed smoking to pregnant women to calm their nerves. DDT became one of the most deadly substances ever used on our food supply. I just don't see the science supporting that this type of food is perfectly fine for you.

Another glaring example of the disparity between the standard our gov sets for us is BVO..or Brominated Vegatable oil. It is currently added to drinks such as Mountain Dew, PepsiCO still uses it in all their citrus related products.. to provide the citrus taste. IT WAS INITIALLY PATENTED AS A FLAME RETARDANT..And is banned all over the world, the exceptions being the U.S. and Canada. Japan, India, most of Europe all say No bueno to this-but not the FDA. So while the government is assuring us science supports GMO foods...I remain solidly unconvinced. Whole, organic, unaltered food is what your body needs IMO.

The safety of GM foods has been established not by the government but by the AAAS, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a body of scientists and other experts.

Plenty of scientific data showing that the edible part (e.g. kernel of corn) of the GM plant is indistinguishable from the edible part of the non-GM plant. The only thing to consider imo is whether GM plants that escape into the wild pose a risk to tje ecosystem.

It's hard to maintain a garden in Florida. And I personally don't have the time, unfortunately.
