Great post! I'm e-mailing a copy of this post to my mother who although she eats clean, she just doesn't understand that fruit is not benefitting her since she is trying to loose fat. Props to my mom though, she just came in first place in a senior's race. :)Originally posted by Faye
Again, I'm with RS on this one. Very little to no fruit while cutting and then only stawberries and blueberries, and then only in the pre-workout meal.
Logic: Fruit contains fructose which is not immediately availible to your muscles as energy. Fructose must first be made into glycogen by your liver, if you liver glycogen stores are full that fructose will immediately be converted into FAT.

sorry rs but maybe some people are just better than you and your friends because i shure as hell eat atleast 1 bannana a day and easily cut down to 6% bf. i'm not a BB so I could careless about being in a contest but I didnt see the banana interferring with my fat loss. and for the record I was not on any AS or supplemenets other than protein

Just for the record, my post has nothing to do with the GI or GL of foods, just the metabolism of fructose. Personally, I think it's more of an issue for women b.c. they have a diffucult time getting into the single digits for bf%. I know plenty of men who eat some (some, not a lot) of fruit during a contest diet.

That's IS the point. However, IMO, I think 55 is too much, even for a male. When several of my friends did shows last year, the most fruit they ate in a day was 6-8 strawberries, not at the same sitting.Originally posted by Rome
the point is you dont need to cut out all fruit from your diet to get ripped.

Faye the GI will determine to some extent whether there is a chance to metabolise to fat. High GI foods cause insulin to spike causing a potential fat gain. Low GI foods like most fruit will generally be used for energy because they dont cause an insulin spike. Frucose has nothing to do with it.

"[NOTE] There has been a lot of hysteria about fruit for about the last 5 years or so. It is true that different carbohydrates are metabolized differently in the body, depending on their ring structure. The panic about fructose, which was then misapplied to fruit, arose out of research using mice and high fructose corn syrup. The concern about fruit, although based on some truths about the metabolism of fructose, is unfounded. High Fructose corn syrup is an extremely dense source of fructose. When consumed in the diet, it overloads the liver with glycogen, which then leads to insulin resistance and lipogenesis in that organ. Fruit, on the other hand, is neither calorie nor fructose dense. Fresh raw fruit is mostly water and fiber. One piece of fresh fruit has about 17 grams of carbs per serving with relatively insignificant amounts of fructose compared to high fructose corn syrup. So, don't worry about eating fresh raw fruit. But steer clear of anything with high fructose corn syrup in it. "
Eat your fruit forget the myth.

Here is a good starting point to understand the GI and GL. Follow eating low GI/Gl foods and the fat will melt away. Follow some of the links there for other resources. Some links from time to time do not work. www.anycities.com/user1/mendosa/gilists.htm

Excellent posts, RM....Even though, I personally still won't eat fruit, ..LOL , it's still some great info you posted up there.
But, here's a question- if fruit affects your body the way these links say it does, then why do so many fad diets, ie.:South Beach Diet, Atkins, the Zone, all keep fruit to a bare minimum??
Just a question, not a flame...

Just think about it. There fad diets that ultimately are unhealthy. If you start on a low carb diet you will lose almost immetiatelly (first week or two) at least 5 lbs. from water weight. The only good thing about those diets is people are cutting out all the bad carbs which are very unhealthy. Processed foods etc. The body needs a host of macronutrients some only come from fruits. Dont get me wrong. I practice what most would consider a high protein diet. Proteins consume more calories in digestion and raise the metabolism. I get at least 30 to 40 percent of my calories from protein.

I agree that they are for the most part, unhealthy. However, there are some that can acutally be adapted into everday life. The Zone, and Body for Life are pretty easy to maintain. But, even in Body for Life the fruits/ veggies listed are all low in GI. Apples, carrots, etc...just a thought...
Excellent discussion/
