  • Proper form for Dumbbell Shoulder Press

This is my first post, was wondering if I could get some opinions. I have been working out for a few years but lately have been trying to get rid of the bad form I have on some of my exercises.

I wanted to know what people think the proper form is for dumbbell bench press. I have been doing this exercise by having my arms at a start position with my arms at 90 degrees and bringing it all the way up. I can currently do 70-80 pounds for this. I have been told that I should be bringing it all the way down and touching my shoulders with each rep which I can only do with 60-65 pounds. Most of the people in the gym do it at a 90 degree angle as I have been doing and I have had good results that way. Would I get better results bringing the movement all the way down or is that exercising the smaller muscles in the shoulder and will not provide noticeable results?

    Thanks

Agh my opinoin stick with the 90 degrees, when it comes to your shoulders you can never be too careful. If your mess up your shoulder it will effect most of the other workouts you do..especially chest . The risk isn't worth the small award for bringing the weights down that far.

You should go slightly lower than 90 degrees but not touch the shoulder. A controlled movement with slightly lower weight but good form is always preferable.

Always be careful when training shoulders...90 degrees is good enough...There are plenty of other shoulder exercises to fill you out

Yea, I would go with the 90 degrees or slightly lower than that. I'm sure you could easily kill your shoulder by going too low and going that low probably won't hinder your gains.

Yeah shoulders are obviously a common problem if you look at all the posts related to it, so i would'nt take any chances...from what it sounds like alot of us who frequent the training posts have had past shoulder problems so just try to treat your most mobile joint with care
