Not that tall, but like you said num1, smaller guys are going to have an advantage. My deadlift and squat numbers are pretty good, so hopefully that'll give me an edge for when it comes to slamming guys on the mat.
wow bro your gonna cut around 40lbs? have you tryed that yet? i have no clue but i would think your strength will drop crazy. when you gonna fight? since we are neighbors i would come out and support ya. i have a friend that just won king of the cage heavy weight title. what are you gonna fight in?

          Hey Beef -

I would be pissed at you if you lost 40 pounds and then came in and kicked my ass just because you lost a ton of weight in a few weeks. I don't compete, it's just the idea of it. I'm sure it's a common practice I just don't know how fair I think it is...

I'm over 185 now but I pulled up some of my old workouts the other day and figured I would help out.

          5'8" - 184 pds

          Bench - 225x12, 245x10, 265x8

          Shoulder Press - 155x12, 165x10, 175x8

          Deadlifts - 405x12, 455x8, 495x6

          Squats - 315x12, 365x10, 405x6

          Leg Presses (45degree incline) - 945x12, 1035x8, 1125x6

I fluctuate between 200-205 now but I would say the weights have only increased by about 20%-25%. I took about 2-3 years off but when I came back I knew a ton more about my diet etc. I had dropped below 185 for quite some time in my absence from the weight room so it took me a few months to get where I'm at now. I hope to start a cycle in the next year or two but my goal is to reach 215-225 natural first :D Best of luck...

It's fight fest on november 26th in fairfield. I'm undecided on whether i'm going to have time to do it though. I have to drop 12lbs of body weight from now until then. And then cut the water weight before weigh in. Either that or come in at the 205 weight class. So far my strength is still the same so guess we'll see what happens after a few more pounds. I'll keep ya posted bro.

Thanks for the details bro. That really helps. Ya, sometimes I start thinking to myself that it's cheating coming in heavier than your opponent and it makes me just want to come in normal. But it's getting increasingly more common so if I came in normal, i'd be up against a guy who probably cut water and is heavier than me.

:agree: It's super common, even in high school wrestling, to cut weight for weigh-ins and then rehydrate and eat a bunch before the match. I have a fight 10/15, but I can weight in 10/14 at noon, so I'll dehydrate and then begin rehydrating and refueling right after weigh-ins, so I'll come in plenty over my weigh-in weight. If everybody else does it then that's what I'll do to stay competitive.

Don't get me wrong, I understand the concept. I'm just not sure it's worth it. There are lot's of things out there that I admire and respect, I just wouldn't do them and I may or may not agree with them. To each his own I suppose. I'm into motorcycles/racing/skydiving and other extreme sports in general and some people swear I'm stupid because those types of things are dangerous etc.

Best of luck though to anyone who can perform at this level of competition. I do admire it...

The only way to stay competitive is to cut as much wgt as possible and still retain strength... it starts in H.S. training methods and progresses from there

i cut 40 lbs in 11 weeks for Nationals this year.

My strength ony dropped in the last week...and that was due to water/sodium depletion.

I don't think weight loss and strength loss have to be correlated.

IMO...if his diet/training/cardio/supplementation are spot-on...and coupled with a good visualisation routine pre-training...he shouldn't lose any strength at all.

                          5'7'' 180 lbs.
                          incline barbell bench-225 for 10x3
                          flat dumbell-100s for 7-10x3
                          sit down squats-225 for 15x3
deads-only do semi-light deads so it doesnt correspond to this
and I think there is a way to minimize strength loss when loosing weight but it is inevitable that you will, especially if your dropping 40 lbs. I lost 25 lbs with proper diet/training/supplementation and lost some strength.

Just wondering what kind of strength advantage I would have, if any, if I were to be in this weight class. I know that these aren't deciding factors, but I would like to know though. If you could post stuff like what weight you're pressing for stuff like bench press, shoulder press, deadlifts, squats, that would really be appreciated.
I'm not particularly fluent with lifting compared to most, but I was under the impression that the shorter your muscles are, the easier it is to lift the same amount. Hence this question would require height and weight to determine accurately what you compare to. I know that someone that is 5'6" 185lbs will lift more than I do at 6'0" 185lbs. They'll also look a lot more ripped as well.

Anyway, as far as stats go, can't help you with bench, I don't bench, it screws with my collar bone and shoulder on my right arm for some reason. With shoulder press I do 3 sets x 100(2x50), I do that on a machine. With dumbells I would usually do about 3 sets x 80(2x40). I don't do deadlifts, last time I did those I fucked up my back. For squats I use a machine, basically like freeweight except it holds the bar in line, at my highest I was doing around 2 sets of 225 I believe, that was a year ago, when I fucked up my back I quit doing those too. Now I do 3 sets of 130x10reps.

Bear in mind that I'm one of the smaller guys at the gym. Also one of the smallest guys on these forums, that's why I don't care to tell you my lifts.

EDIT: I should also mention that I'm around 15% BF, so for all intensive purposes, if you're cut, and 185lbs for instance, you easily have 10-15lbs more muscle than I.
