I think this is the key point.

For example, my goals are functional fitness and strength, not size. I want to be strong and be able to run and exert myself for long periods of time without getting exhausted.

My circuits are something along these lines:

    Burpees - 30 seconds
    Jumping jacks - 30 seconds
    Grasshoppers - 30 seconds
    Split Jumps - 30 seconds
    Mountain climbers - 30 seconds

Repeat 5 times - first with 30 seconds rest before repeating the circuit, then do them without rest when you get better.

You can also change out the exercises with other things - b/w squats, man makers, etc.

    Other things you can do:

Burpees for time: How many can you do in 5 minutes
100 burpees in as short a time as possible,

    etc. etc.

Obviously these circuits are geared towards fitness and anerobic conditioning. If this is the kind of stuff you want, I would recommend reading up on Ross Enamait. His book "Infinite Intensity" is the bible IMO on total conditioning - it is geared towards fighters but the principles are applicable equally if you want to get strong and have high endurance as well.

I wouldnt try to do both b/c you'll accomplish neither unless you have to maintaine strength for a sport (football player, etc.)

        whats the conditioning for?

behind all this other bs its sounds to me like you just want to lean up. just continue to train w w8ts and clean up your diet.
i'm not a pro bodybuilder. i'm 6ft 220. i have done a few cycles in the past and gained a lot of size and felt great where i was at the time. life got in the way, i lost what i had and now i'm back down to 220 with some extra body fat. i have the muscle mass i'm happy with right now, i just want to lean out. there's no reason i'd come here and try to impress anyone. i love working out but hate cardio. so lately i was just thinking more about circuit training and was just curious why it's not done more for people who aren't looking to compete of trying to be the biggest guy in the gym.

the conditioning is just for personal fitness. i snowboard and play baseball so i'd like to have as much conditioning as possible. i don't see a problem with that

just to clarify, i didn't take your response as an insult at all. i just felt like i had to clear the air since there's obviously a lot of fakes on the internet and i don't post much but i'm on this site quit a bit. thanks for your input though. seriously dude

Also, tabatas are very good. Do 20 sec on as hard as you can, 10 seconds off for 8 cycles. It is 4 minutes of misery but will make you a *lot* fitter. You can use it with any bodyweight exercises or running, but my favorites are burpees.

what are the pros and cons of circuit training vs. regular splits?

EDIT* i'm not looking to get huge anymore. i'm just trying to slowly build muscle while shed the fat.
            hi
A split is a position of the body in which both the legs are parrallel to each other.Where as circuit training is trying one exercise after the other.Sqauts follows by push ups.I mostly take squat and the circuit training is large in variety have different exercises in it as compare to the splits.
