  • Hey Guys need some advice for my mom.

Hello all, Ive shocked my family with my own diet that worked. And I inspired my mom to start one too. She is in more of a worse case then me. Most of all because she's older and its not as easy for her to excercise as a kid can just go and run around. Shes 45ish...(sry I dont know her exact age eeeek). And needs help. I got her started on watching her carbs but not extremely. And got her eating salads proteins and certain fruits mainly an orange or an apple or cherries. But I watch her with those mainly only one a day with those. For Snacks she has some unsalted pretzels if she must or some tuna. Also need to know of any of those you know essential things women need? I see it on tv how made for women and stuff cause you need some essential vitamins / minerals that we dont need as much.

Mainly what I need help with is her actual breakfast / lunch / after dinner ideas. Her things are fine its just that I dont want her to get sick after a month and start going off of it. Thx alot guys she has alot of will power ( that's who i got it from to loose my 100 pounds). I wish she can too and with me at her side and some advice from you guys I think we can help her out.

BTW Excercise is her sluggish point. Im getting her used to the fact she will need to go on the tredmill we have, 20 mins a day at least and am trying to tell her to keep a good fluxuation during those 20 mins. It's hard because shes not used to it all and I basically from reading off of websites/ magazines taught my self how to loose weight but I find it will be more of a sucess for her to loose weight because she has some support from someone who went through it. Thx alot guys...err gals I should say. =)

well, great to hear you're trying to help your mom out. as with anyone starting out - it's always important to start with the basics.

#1. remove all processed foods from your diet - i.e. instant rice, instant meals in a bag, instant or fast cook anything that's made for ease.

#2. introduce her to what a good carb is - i.e. whole wheat pasta (if you can't get her to stop eating pasta right away) vs. regular semolina flour pasta, LOTS OF GREEN LEAFY VEGGIES AND FIBROUS VEGGIES!!! fresh veggies in salads with olive oil & vinegrette vs. fat ladened salad dressings

#3. be supportive!!! stay supportive!! and have her remember, this isn't a sprint, it's a marathon. you need to set your sights on long term goals if you want to succeed.

#4. she NEEDS to exercise. though diet is 90% of the game, she still needs to increase her activity levels. get her started slow. if she doesn't like the treadmill, get her out on walks around the neighborhood. anything that'll get her going.

    good luck with your mom!

      ditto Sana,

Figure out her basic metabolic rate, start logging foods and get one of those books, or print something off the net that counts grams of carbs, fat & proteins .

Almost all dieting success' count calories, to think you can't will just make things harder.

And kudos for you in helping your mom, and to have discovered your own success.

      good luck

          Sana, this is great advice!

In my experience older people tend to be less interested in more traditional forms of exercise, i.e. treadmills, etc. However, they will be very interested in going for a walk, especially with their friends or even with you.

See if you can hook her up with any of her friends who can maybe go for a 1 hour walk every morning or 3 times a week or whatever. Otherwise, it is a nice way to spend an hour with a parent, so you may want to go along too. I do this sometimes with my mom.

What about bike riding? My mom likes to do that and its easy on the joints and muscles.
