If the new laptop comes with an internal ethernet card, then it'll be pretty much just a matter of plug in the cable and it works.

If there's no internal network card, you'll have to buy a PCCard or PCMCIA ethernet adapter. Or get a wireless hub and a wireless adapter for the laptop.
