A car is the worst investment you will ever have. I am a leasing kind of person now because of my experience with my last car. With the amount I put into my last car I made nothing with what I got for it when i traded it in.

Bouncer your are way better off with a lease anyway. Purchasing that thing would cost you like $1000/month. These days cars are not worth anything on trade in.

The Cayman is a much more civilized car...says Hammond. I think it just spurs from what kind of person you are. Having actually driven a Porsches and BMW's my entire life its simply all about taste. I'd do the Z4 because its such a drivers car, anyone can drive the Cayman well. I sound exactly like Hammond.

The Cayman and Boxster are almost exactly the same.

i see your point chris but the bottom line is this, its cheaper and in 3 years i get a new one.

the acura made sense to buy because we can pay that off in a few years and will keep it for a few years after than. the Cayman on the other hand would take longer to pay off and after I finally got it payed off it would be 5-6 years old and who knows what kind of issues and how expensive it would be to fix.

I don't think you see my point, because its that its cheaper to finance than lease. It doesn't matter though. The Cayman is a great car and you should definitely get it. It has to be in Porsche Yellow though.

By purchasing a car, even with interest and financing you have a liquid asset. The Cayman is a great car, not as good as the Z4 M Coupe, but its fun. Its going to hold its value well and it will be easy to sell privately in 3 years. Even if you take out a loan term longer than 36 months, you can come out ahead financially in 3 years. I'm not telling him to keep the car longer than that. Hell I would keep it for as long as it has a warranty if he doesn't want to face maintenance costs.

I bet the difference you will find between leasing(36 months) and financing(60months) is like 150 bucks. I could be really wrong, but I think it won't be as great as you think Bouncer.
Again, I KNOW the difference between a lease and a purchase. I thought I clearly stated that.

And, your comment about "only" $150 more a month - that's the difference between a $450 payment (which he stated was reasonable) or a $600 payment (which he also stated he didn't want) - you said it like it was $5.

The difference between leasing and buying isn't as much as you might think. To buy a $50,000 automobile, let's say the interest rate is like 7%, if you went with a 60 month loan, you'd end up paying about $1000/mo. If you went with a 72 month loan, you'd end up paying about $850/mo. In the NY/ NJ area a lease is going to run you about the same probably more. You can find 2 Cayman's for lease on that website in NY and they're $1,100 and $1,300/mo, so in that case, you'd actually be paying more to lease.

With a lease you don't have to worry about selling it and you can just lease a new car every 3 years. That's about the only up-side to leasing a car. If that's what you want, than lease the car. We are talking about a Porsche here, though, so you can bet the car is going to hold it's resale value extremely well. Even with the hassle of reselling it, in NJ you're going to get a pretty good price.

It would also depend on the terms of the lease. I don't know leases very well, but if there's a mileage restriction and you go over, you could end up paying more than you bargained for.

You're not the one wanting to lease the Cayman, so who cares. :D

Well, http://www.porsche.com/usa/caymanleaseoffer/ has an add to lease the 2008 Cayman for $650/month for 36 months with 5K down. You'd have to see if you qualify.
