            Feature: Column
My brother asked me last week who I was planning on voting for a few weeks ago. I was stumped for an answer. I hadn’t even thought about it. How many of our younger generation, I am 26 years old, truly have? I never gave it a second though. Until recently, while listening to the news, I heard something about “The Keating Five,” and John McCain. I believed this to just be some propaganda, until I heard them mention the economic crisis of the 1990’s. During this savings and loan crisis 747 savings and loan associations failed. Wall Street was in a slump. Sound familiar?
So I decided to do some more digging. Poking around the internet, I came upon an article written by Mark R. Levin in 2001 for the National Review. The “Keating five” were five senators whom had accepted gifts from Charles H. Keating Jr. Keating owned Lincoln Savings & Loan Association. The “Keating Five” were accused of accepting money in exchange for pressuring federal officials to take it easy on the Lincoln Association. One of these five senators was John McCain.
McCain was cleared of any outright misconduct, but scolded for his poor judgment by the Senate Select Committee on Ethics. This means McCain, the reformer, is the same as many others. He accepted gifts, which may have biased his judgment, allowing the rich to expand unjustly at the expense of the middle and lower class. The government was forced to spend over $100 billion to correct this mess. Again, does any of this sound familiar?
The government now wants to spend $700 billion to correct Wall Street’s greed. I admit, a healthy Wall Street is good for all of America. Though, why are the Chief Executives allowed to continue to increase their riches while making bad decisions that affect everyone?
I am not insinuating that McCain has had any part in the current crisis. The current crisis seems to relate closely to the crisis in many attributes from the research I have performed. McCain has had two decades in the Senate to correct the regulation, or lack thereof, from the savings and loan crisis of the 1980’s. It seems he has either chosen not to correct past mistakes, or has failed in his bid to do so. For that reason, I feel a new outlook, a new mind, maybe the best choice to lead this country. So on Election Day, I am going to vote for Senator Barack Obama. Not because I feel he is the perfect candidate. Rather, he is the best option, for he has not yet had a chance to fail.

Are you another one of those people that thinks because he was a POW that he deserves and is capable of being the president?

He made a great sacrifice for our country and he has all my respect for that, but that is as far as it goes. The man can't keep his thoughts together from one day to the next. And Palin...that woman isn't worth the time to comment.

We truly have to get away from the Bush administration and voting in a war hawk like McCain isn't going to do it.

              IMHO

The idea that America will be in a conventional war with Islamic and Muslim fundamentalists on its own soil is bonkers. If you truly believe that is the case then you may seek help from your nearest professional. But since you're clearly a close minded 'Republican' it would be a liberal wacko from down the street. Besides, the intelligent terrorist would strike in America regardless of any war efforts abroad. Have you learned nothing of the current generation? So, in my opinion the real best idea is to keep our troops here.

On to the economy. Neither one of these idiots has the ability to actually do anything meaningful in the White House. Both McCain and Obama want to lower taxes, keeping in mind they both are going keep spending at near the same level. Obama may pull out of Iraq, but he has made it clear that he will increase our presence in Afghanistan. So military spending remains at current levels and both candidates have made it blatantly clear they want to save the "Middles class" by throwing money at them one way or another. Digging our current balance sheet even greater into the red.

McCain wants to cut taxes on business, and by businesses he means all of them. Guess what, even less operating revenue for the business that he is running that is in trillions of dollars of debt.

If either one of them had the balls to be honest, they would tell use that, McCain will likely raise taxes and so will Obama. Obamas tax increase will burden the rich, McCains the 'middle class'. Trickle down economics has proven itself a poor theory in this decade. Bush lowered taxes for companies and encouraged outsourcing. His efforts combined with that of the Federal Reserve, who prints money like its made of paper and not backed by any type of material good, have sufficiently devalued the dollar to be nothing. As a result we can't buy half of what we could 8 years ago with the same dollar, gas is at crazy prices, and overall real world wealth has shifted dramatically. Oh and the DOW, that used to be able to buy 40 ounces of gold in 2000, can only buy 16 ounces now...at a higher level...funny.

Regardless of politics and how much I dislike President Bush and his policies the idea that either man or Congress can or will changes things is ridiculous. Both men have lobbyists working on their campaigns as advisers and both have taken money from wealthy contributors. Congress just passed a bill that most Americans were kicking and screaming about...by adding $150 billion in pork.

If neither man has the balls to stare straight into a camera and say, "We have to cut government spending, we have to raise taxes, and we HAVE to get this country out of debt! NOW!" they are worth nothing in my book. I feel bad for the poor saps that own US T-Bills as they are likely to be the next thing hit from this current financial crisis...because the margin on a T-Bill is still only about 20%.

Hmmm....that's funny- have you read Obama's Tax Plan? What you're saying about lowering taxes is pretty dead on with his tax cuts. Simple economics+ you have to put more money BACk into people's pockets NOW to get the economy churning again.

What I find amusing is that you started this thread when you've clearly stated you aren't voting. You have a right to your opinion, but I just think it's ignorant to make the statements you have, and not participate in the governing of your country.

lol and you think he will actually DO THAT? that is ignorant to me...I think voting is the DUMBEST participation in govt possible. education is the key to a stronger country (which is why we are where we are). and no I didn't read obamas plan because I wouldn't believe one word of it. did it also include cutting welfare and other leeching programs that we shouldn't have or was it talking about becoming a socialized society including healthcare? its great to cut taxes but if you then socialize the country into a communist regime, well....aren't we all lucky. I don't think tax cuts alone will do it....they need to get out of our lives and let people fend for themselves.
