  • Gastric bypass surgery...

I'm hearing more and more about this. It seems like every story I read about someone losing a lot of weight and transforming themself... this surgery is involved.

My first impression is to just say these people are lazy and its the easy way out, but I won't, because I admittedly don't know anything about it. Anyone know any more about it? And no, I'm not asking because I'm considering it. Thatd be a lot of money to drop 4% more BF. :dunno:

One of the main reasons it's becoming more popular is because more insurance companies are covering it more and covering more of it. In a lot of cases people could do it themselves because all that's happening is they are forced to change their diets because if they don't they get a lot of uncomfortable side effects (e.g. gas, cramps, diarrhea). There are restrictions on how to qualify to get help from the insurance. Basically they have to start living a healthier lifestyle and eating like they would post-op to get their bodies use to it, for about 90 days. A certain amount of weight loss is usually required to show that you are going to put the effort in. That's because for the insurance company, the surgery is cheaper than the long term maintenance of being morbidly obese. They also have to go through a psych evaluation, which of course is another insurance cost if you are in constant need of a psychologist. The more popular thing I hear about now is the "bands" that can be removed later and once people get their weight under control they can go back to enjoying more foods in a moderate way. Here's my thing...If you ever watch The Biggest Looser, all those people do it through diet and exercise. I know we have to be careful about painting a broad brush over any group of people, but I think about 90% or more of the patients who get it done, could do it without the surgery if they didn't have the security blanket. At the same time though a lot of those people wouldn't even bother trying to get healthy. The ironic part about those I have known to get the surgery, they go from huge to just big. It seems they get so much praise for not being ginormous they loose focus and get content to easily with just being "average". They sink back into their bad habbits and end up on a constant yo-yo of weight gain vs. maintaining.

or she could have done the same thing if she had put down the cookie..

no offense bro but that's all it boils down too. our society has become so lazy that we are not even accountable for our own fat gain anymore.

you think your wife would have needed gastric bypass if instead of growing up in America she had grown up in a tribe in the amazon?

the only thing it dose is make your stomach smaller. he could have gotten the same result if he went on a strict diet..

Sad but true. I work with a girl at work who had it done. She is a fucking sweetheart, and I love her to pieces. She is actually a very pretty girl now. But even after that fucking surgery she has popcorn and cookies at every break during the day. It is getting ridiculous and it seems like its just getting so common.

B - they did all of that bro at 53 years old his body would not respond like they wanted and the type of slin they were giving him was packing on the lbs was scary to watch him grow by leaps and bounds - last resort was the sugery and that was done to mainly get the diabetes under control which it did . the weight loss being the direct result and benefit to him

exactly. i am by no means putting down people here. i no a lot of fat people that are great people. the real problem is ignorance. i know this one dude about 300lbs at no more then 5'7ft. he tells me all the time how he eats well and cant lose weight. told him to right down his diet for me one day and to be honest. the guy skipped breakfast, and then proceeded to eat 3 meals for the rest of the day. each meal had around 2000cals in it. so that adds up to 6000 cals a day. the crazy thing was, he wasnt eating tons of actual food weight. it was just that his food choices and condiments, soft drinks etc were all very high in empty calories. add in bad genetics and no activity and you have a whale.

once again though bro. the only thing gastric bypass surgery does is make you full much faster and thus you dont eat as much. if the surgery "worked" for him it was because he is consuming less calories now. you see what i am saying bro? you say his body wouldn't respond to diet but yet it did respond to the surgery. well... lol

This guy I knew had it done, he was 400+ and a police officer. He was skinny for about 6 months and then kept eating his old amounts of calories and eventually ended up stretching his stomach back to its normal capacity.

                            Quick story about him:

He was driving his patrol car one day and shifted his body or something, well it turned out his fat ass sat on his mace can and it started spraying all into his car. He ended up running off the road and wrecking the car.
