wrong. gastic bypass is an alteration of the intestines. the food bypasses a large portion of the intestines so it doesn't get absorbed. it really has nothing to do with the stomach. maybe you sould research it more before you rip people apart and get all self righteous? Its easy to judge whgen you aren't in their situation....

        nobody is ripping people apart.

are you telling me that this surgery does not make the stomach smaller?

you can stick up for your wife all you want, (i respect that, i would do the same) but you know damn well that a large part of her problem was her fault and could have been prevented with diet and exercise.

you act as if these people are paralyzed and cannot exercise. you act as if they have 0 control over themselves and their problems. you act like this is a disease like cancer that the victim played no part in the illness. that kind of thought process enables these people to become 300, 400, 1000lbs..

these people may have terrible genes and that is ashame. but that is not an excuse to be morbidly obese. there was no such thing as "morbidly obese" 150 years ago, didn't exist.

            i agree with bouncer 100%.
100% of the time these people could lose the weight if they could exercise every time they reached for the jumbo case of oreos
and turbos right about stretching the stomach back out to normal size

Ok I think the debate here is whether people can actually lose the weight like others can. I would agree 100% that there are some overweight people who are so "gone" they need the surgery to ever get back to normal. But unless you are talking about some extreme medical condition, it is hard to deny that all of them had 100% control when they were getting that way in the first place. Fair enough?

I have a family history of Type 2 diabetes. There are like 4 people in my family who are diabetic because of this. As much as I hate to say it, EVERY one of them developed it because they didnt take care of themselves. Now they are on all types of medications and diets, and it really is nearly impossible to lose all that weight NOW. But they definately didnt have to get like that.

As far as type 1 diabetes, 2 of my friends have type 1 and they are in great shape, so its tough to really use that as an excuse either.

again, this "problem" did not exist 150 years ago.

it has gotten so easy and cheap to get high calorie food. many people in america literally sit or lay down 16 or more hours a day.

even those people that you call "gone" can lose the weight. diabetes or not. i would put them on a protein/healthy fat diet. only carbs would be from veggies. they would drink 1 gal of water a day. once they had lost enough weight to move, they would be started on a cardio program, it would start small and then get harder.

let me control what these "gone" people eat and I will bring them back from "gone" no surgery needed.

i am serious here. people need to stop making excuses and looking for some other factor to blame. these people need to say to themselves, "i am the reason i am like this and i can change it." same goes for these peoples family's and friends, stop making fucking excuses! these people are the enablers.

                    account - a fucking - bility

No I agree completely... I just had to jump on that funny quote. Small to harder? Haha.

Seriously though I do agree. It seems like the country is getting so politically correct, we almost have to be just as sensitive to fat people as we do to mentally disabled people. I don't think fat is a disability. The fact that insurance covers this surgery and people can get handicap stickers just for being fat is pretty crazy. I think insurance should only cover the surgery if the patient can prove it was an outside medical condition that made them get like that in the first place. Which I'm guessing would be well under 1% of cases.

                            from WebMD

"Gastric bypass surgery makes the stomach smaller and allows food to bypass part of the small intestine. You will feel full more quickly than when your stomach was its original size, which reduces the amount of food you eat and thus the calories consumed. Bypassing part of the intestine also results in fewer calories being absorbed. This leads to weight loss."

So its a combination of both. People eat less, and then a portion of what they do eat is shitted out instead of absorbed. But basically in the end its all the same, FEWER NET CALORIES.

yup. if they simply has the willpower to deal with a little hunger and restrict the calories, they could do it themselves.
