Kind of the same topic here, but it just seems like the way society is going, by making us be sensitive to the overweight, and even giving them special privleges like paying for their surgeries and giving them handicap stickers, etc. I think anything this country can do to go back to a more "survival of the fittest" attitude would be great. Oh well, not like that will ever happen. One of the many reasons I dont believe we live in the "greatest country in the world" anymore.

no offense bro but that's all it boils down too. our society has become so lazy that we are not even accountable for our own fat gain anymore.

you think your wife would have needed gastric bypass if instead of growing up in America she had grown up in a tribe in the amazon?
      bs. thats just ignorant
yes there is a percentage of the population who are lazy (mostly celebrities) and get the procedure done but the vast majority dont and have meet to strict critiria to even be considers especially 10 yrs ago.

Curious - what are these "problems" that a few people are mentioning that make it so overweight people can't lose weight on their own?

My first impression is to just say these people are lazy and its the easy way out, but I won't, because I admittedly don't know anything about it. Anyone know any more about it? And no, I'm not asking because I'm considering it. Thatd be a lot of money to drop 4% more BF. :dunno:
its not a matter of being lazy.... let me explain it to you in terms you can understand. ppl born with really bad genetics and who also are often raised with poor eating and lifestyle habits are forced to make a descision to get a very risky (sometimes deadly) medical procedure which alters there ability to overeat greatly by reducing the size of there stomach. after they get this procedure they have to be on a extremely strict diet for the rest of their lifes (liquid only for the first year!)... if they fall off the wagon they die b/c the stomach explodes from overeating.

no my friend, you and your attitude is ignorant. read the whole thread.

its a simple science. if you take in less calories then you burn you will lose weight. some people may have slower metabolisms but the rule is still the same.

this problem did not exist 150 years ago, it does not exist in many poor countries.

you just confirmed my argument. this is not a "disease" that can only be fixed with surgery.

it can be fixed by simply changing their lifestyle. even the 1000lb women that can only lay in bed could fix the problem with diet. if she burns 1000 cals a day just laying there, then she needs to be on a 900 cal a day diet. there is no disease on this earth that changes calories in vs calories out.

That is the "Fat Acceptance Movement", where fat people are encouraged to be happy with their inner beauty and not hide in their homes. All the shows where fat people get healthier, I never heard one of them say "I wish I was still fat". As for the insurance companies; they are not paying for the surgery because of the acceptance, that's simply about numbers. They have figured in the medical costs of obesity versus the cost of the surgery. That's why there are regulations set forth before the surgery is covered, so that insurance doesn't pay for the surgery and then have those people back on obesity medical care a short time later.

i dont mean to come off as offensive so relax. :fufool: you insulted the guys wife
slower metabolisms...? its much deeper than that. if they eat anything and they gain bodyfat. extremely poor genetics see ppl with good genetics dont get it. its just the way it is.

150 yrs ago they didn't have the problems we have now fast food, corn syrup, etc. they probably just died. our modern society is part to blame...

slow metabolisms is the principle reason these people gain weight, that stems from genetics, activity level, and diet.. so no its not more complicated then that.

its not about getting it or not getting it. its science and nothing more. if these people would eat less calories then they burn, they would lose weight. this fact is not disputable.

these people with terrible genes need to realize they cannot eat like you or me. its not fair but it is not an excuse either. they need to be accountable for themselves and take the steps necessary to curb the problem. (diet and cardio.)

As for the insulin debacle, my grandfather has been a type 1 (genetic) diabetic since his early 20's and has always been in great shape. Type 2 diabetics (the non-genetic class) usually are unhealthy to start. Both cases are strained with the same possible problems. Choose to change your life to live as healthy as possible with diabetes or use it as an excuse and try to "cover" all your extra calories with insulin. Overweight diabetics are constantly trying to "cover" the extra calories with extra insulin, which leads to a much higher weight gain. I'm sure it's hard mentally when you first go on insulin, most everyone gains a noticeable amount of weight until your body adjusts. The things you do after that is what makes the difference.

lol you think the only reason why ppl put on bodyfat is because of slow metabolisms?

ok i agree it can be curved if its targeted early in ones life but thats not a reality. kid is like 300lbs at 14 yrs old - diet and gym (which they try first) doesnt make the problem go away.

plus the fucking surgery is horrible... nobody wants that surgery its not like lipo LOL

YOU MAY DIE FROM THE PROCEDURE
IF YOU SURVIVE YOU MAY DIE FROM COMPLICATIONS
IF YOU OVER EAT YOU WILL DIE

its a last resort and it benifits all of society (tax payers, insurance companies) if these ppl get the w8t down... yes some are raging fat asses who dont even try i hear you this is frustraging... a lot are desparate and have exhausted all other options

the reason people gain weight is because they are consuming more calories then they are using. i thought i made that pretty clear in the last post.

the problem would go away if they took the necessary steps to make it go away. once again, eat less then you burn and the weight goes away. keep trying to argue the science bro, you fail every time.

                            "nobody wants that surgery". FALSE.

Have to agree with that. Look at the plastic surgery industry.

if they had exhausted all options they would not need surgery.
