if you end up wanting to stick to a PC, i really like the designs of most HPs and Sonys. they cost in the higher $800s but it is worth it. I like the HP Envy, mainly because the raised/separated keyboard is something i've come to think of as a staple for my laptops. and the other thing you want to take into consideration is the screen. i love my MBP screen a lot. the brightness and clarity, especially since it's not an HD screen.
My last hp battery stopped charging to 100% about 3 months after I bought it and then the hard drive failed about a year after I bought it. It was cheaply built tons of lose plastic etc..
I have to buy a laptop for school and I am going Mac.
1. Wait 6 months for the macbook refresh and mountain lion.
I am getting the macbook air, but the new pros will likely reseamble the current airs. Or wait until the new design and buy the current one for a discount.
My imac has been great, had a few problems but beats my old pcs.
I love windows 7 and would get a toshiba ultrabook if I could simply take it to the store if I had problmes. That is one of Macs biggest strenths.
Toshiba would have to be mailed somewhere and I would be out of a computer for days or weeks.
