            • This is where I went to recently: Centralia Ghost Town - PA - YouTube

quick backstory for you lazy folk: in this small mining town there was a landfill that used to be set on fire to get rid of the trash, the landfill didn't have a safe barrier so some of the flames set the coal underground on fire. the coal is still burning and will continue to for a very long time. PA revoked the zip code to encourage people to leave but there still are 9 registered inhabitants. the road with graffiti is closed off due to it being cracked in several places. at one point it is literally just lifted up like 2 feet.

if this seems familiar, the movie Silent Hill is based loosely off this town. at one point we heard a siren which sounded eerily similar to the one from the movie.

the fog is partly due to the weather (at one point you could barely see the car in front of you) and partly due to the smoke coming out from the ground. my camera was dying so i didn't get very many shots. :(

              Some images:

                • Went to Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden today with my son on a rare non-rainy day here in Portland. It was still a pretty dreary day and I had to shoot at high ISO all day.

                    • Hi iso all day and still this clear? Damn!
Scrum are you still using the lenses that came with the camera or did you buy a new lens?
I have to damn near kill myself to get pictures that clear. I'm taking my camera to the shop tomorrow to get it checked out because I think my shutter is acting up. :(

                      • Yeah, the 4 photos were using 400, 800, 1250 and 1600 ISO. They were definitely more noisy than usual. Only reason the 1st photo was at 400 was because I used fill flash.

For these photos, I used a 100-400 zoom lens that I just got. All my earlier photos were taken with a 70-300 zoom lens or the 18-55 kit lens that I got when I bought the camera. That was a good lens, but the 100-400 is much better. I am going to try to sell the 70-300.

Yeah, the birds look much nicer swimming around in the water than lying on ripper's mudskipper boat.. :D

Most DLSR cameras today are good enough to take these photos. Even the kit lenses are really good, but if you step it up to the next level and get good professional quality lenses, it makes a big difference.

Which camera did you end up going with? I can't remember.
