    Sleep & Bodybuilding
July 12th, 2007 by Paul Johnson

Bodybuilders are so caught up making sure their diet is to a “T” and their workouts are never missed. Getting a good quality sleep however, is just as important for bodybuilding.

    Benefits of Sleep:

The average american only gets 7 hours of sleep according to a recent study. According to a recent study done on men 18 to 27, glucose metabolism dropped 30-40% and had increased levels of cortisol. High levels of cortisol can lead to insulin resistance, fat, muscle breakdown, more difficult athletic recovery, and other effects. The lowering of glucose metabolism normally seen in ederly led researches to speculate that prolonged sleep deprivation can increase aging.

    Improving sleep improves bodybuilding gains:

The body releases human growth hormone during sleep. Although the biggest spike is after you fall asleep, you will continue to release GH in bursts throughout sleep. Getting a good nights sleep without any interruptions will help make sure you get adequate GH released.

As you can see from the earlier study, sleep deprivation causes cortisol to rise. Cortisol is a catabolic hormone and works in the opposite fashion of testosterone, an anabolic muscle building hormone. The higher cortisol levels and other effects on the body shown by this study shows it is necessary to get quality sleep every night or it will greatly effect your ability to gain muscle or lose fat.

How much sleep do bodybuilders need?

Everyone seems to have slightly different requirements. Age, genetics, and lifestyle play a role. Generally a bodybuilder should aim for at least 8 to 9 hours of uninterrupted sleep.

Any supplements to help improve sleep?

ZMA is effective in improving sleep. If you are already slightly deficient in zinc the effects will be more profound. You can get the same effect by taking a zinc supplement pill. Melatonin supplements are another option, although I would caution against long term use of them.

I slept 9 hours last night - in the past week i have had two nights where I did not sleep at all, topping it off they were back to back. The difference in my mind, body and overall spirit with enough sleep is mind blowing. I will spend hundreds on AAS, gym memberships, food - but I also dropped $ on a tempur pedic - my insomnia is no joke (I'm sure rado you know the feeling, it's frustrating as hell) - but I just wanted to remind those who skimp on the rest: you're skimping on your gains.

I have a sleep problem; but on the extreme side. I can literally sleep forever. This past fri I went to bed at 11:00 PM and woke up at 2:00PM Saturday. then Saturday night went to bed at 12:00AM and woke up at 1:00PM. And it is like coma sleep; I am out cold.

Do you sleep through the night Konitz ? ? Are we talking literal 14+ hours of sleep solid ? If this is the case how do you feel when you wake up ?

Yeah I never wake up straight through; When I wake up it usually takes about and hour to get up and running but I feel great like a new person. I have been able to do this after I got in a bad accident and then put me in a induced coma for a week; after that once I fall asleep I have a really hard time waking up. Also, a random side note, I always have really great dreams when I sleep too, maybe that's why I sleep for so long. who knows.

dude if you were a sleeping pill I'd fucking buy you out of business. Wow, I can't tell you how great that sounds to sleep like that solid. I am glad you are holding up okay after an accident that had you in a coma bro! Longest I've been in ICU was 5 days, wasn't a fun time at all. I can't remember the last time I had a dream, literally years. Not sure what that means - I see a sleep specialist soon, I got tired of waiting on ref's from my pcp that bitch is so damn useless unless you give her directions how to do her own job.

sleep is important, natural sleep that is but I don't get too obsessed, if I wake early I don't force myself to stay in bed trying to get back to sleep as that can be a stress in itself. I tend to find since I've been restricting my carbs in the evening that I drift off better

Well the doctor's put me in the coma. I guess when you are on the brink of death in a traumatic experience your body goes into all out fighting mode I guess fight or flight. From what people told me I was just was fighting everything that came near me; so they put me in a coma for a week till I came back to life. Kinda crazy when I think about it. But I guess when your brain hits the inside of your skull so hard it starts to bleed problems are expected.

no doubt bro.. shit glad you are still with us. Do you have to be particularly careful of concussions and head injuries now or has the recovery basically put things back to where it should be in that regard ? I remember mentioning i've a few too many concussions so it's certainly of interest to me. Again, glad you're here bro.

It was so much more than a concussion; it was more like why they caution people about being careful about concussions; what happened to me was the end result.
Doc just told me that I might notice a change in my personality, emotions, and social behaviors. I def did when I first started recovering; I felt I was put in a different body, very strange feeling; just the way I reacted to situations much more aggressive. That actually was when I started going to the gym to try to use up the extra energy; anger. I have short-term memory problems for the rest of my life as well, but in reality if you saw the car and what I looked like; I got off lucky.

The reason I even was searching around for this article is exactly the place I'm at right now. Every single week whether it be one or three days, I will have insomnia for an entire night. I can tell by around 1-2 how bad it will be, pretty sure I won't be up more than a day this time. It honestly does drive me crazy, seeing sleep specialist, hope to god that something comes of it. It's very hard to function in just daily life, let alone pursue your lifting goals with this type of scenario.

I will look for sleep studies and life exp actually while I have time on my hands here - I just don't have a clue why I can't sleep for days literally. I'm not worried, I get upset and kinda loopy as hell but I am just so tired is unreal.

I do know that my PTSD and trying to work through it now w/prof help has affected me big time, my anxiety attacks are insane, but I keep telling myself its just in my head and try to ride it out. I've yet to find a good benzo for it, either two short acting, not strong enough - too strong lol, it's frustrating when SSRis / SNRis make me totally suicidal (which I am not at all). Anyway, thanks for sharing your end about your strugggles with it bro - it really does suck and it's so important.
