  • lactose vs. fructose

Ok, so I'm trying to get my girlfriend into the whole nutrition thing. She feels she needs to have fruit or yogurt every day. Whatever... :) you can't win them all.

So, from a carb point of view, which one is better for your body? I know yogurt has more protein in it, but try to think just about the lactose vs the fructose.

    Thanks.

In moderation they are both okay. To get someone started on a good plan, make exceptions. Women need extra calcium, so yogurt is good in that regard.

Right, but what about lactose and fructose? Which carb is better for your body?

I would say fructose but stay away from high fructose corn syrup, that's not the same plus I would not take in too much, too much carbs will make you fat.

Fruit isn't 100% fructose, have her stick with pieces that are higher in fiber. Lactose isn't necessarily bad either, intolerance should be more of a concern. Dietary calcium has actually been shown to be more effective in fat loss than supplemented calcium.

Lactose, although a sugar is very low glycemically. Fructose will refill liver glycogen before muscle glycogen, just an aside.

right. fructose is the worst sugar you can ingest. it does ZERO for your body other than store fat. it refills liver glycogen only. when liver glycogen is full your body will immediatly begin storing fat. it's that simple. table sugar will do you more good than fructose.

See that's what I thought too. I hate arguing with dumb people about this. I always get the "But fruit is natural, so it has to be good..." Ya, the 'herb' is natural too!

It's far from "that simple", you're assuming a few pieces of fruit throughout the day is going to not only fill the liver with glycogen but it will then overflow and be stored as fat. Considering the liver holds about 50-100 grams of glycogen and a apple contains about 7 grams of fructose that's hardly the case. Not to mention all the other benefits from fruit, vitamins, antioxidants and such.

I'm quite sure the fat epidemic in America isn't due to over-consumption of fruit.

I hope you weren't referring to me as one of these "dumb" people. I'd be more than happy to discuss this if you would like.

No no no, dumb people as in my girlfriend and friends who say fruit is a MUST have in the diet because it's natural.

And I agree, the fat epidemic isn't due to fruit. So if you were to have fruit in your diet, what would you stick with? Apples and banannas?

Not that simple is right especially in the context of this thread. Lactose is half galactose which primarily refills liver glycogen as well (which is not necessarilly a bad thing to a degree). In regards to fructose again it should be noted that the sugar in fruit is not 100% fructose and when you take into account the phytonutrients in fruit it is far from harmful to include some fruit in a diet. I'd agree with you that limiting fructose (and galactose for that matter) is not a bad idea, however, to eliminate them all together is a mistake.

Not saying you didn't know this but table sugar itself is half fructose.

                              Apples, strawberries, NOT bananas.

Personally, I would eat the fruit rather than the yogurt. specifically because of the fiber content. I find the more protein I eat the more fiber I need too.
