  • Chinups *&^%^&%*

Well, yesterday for the first time i incorporated chin ups into my routine, and all I can say is %$&£. I did 1 set narrow grip with no help, then i used the machine which takes off a bit of your bodyweight: I did 3 wide grip and 2 close grip, with some helped reps in every set. I couldn't even sleep last night because my lats killed so much, can't wait to do this workout again.

For those of you that do these as part of your normal workout routine, do you find they develop your lats really well? Should they be used in conjunction with any other exercises in particular for the lats?

Also, if you do these, how many can you do and how much do you weigh? Don't forget to say whether they are wide grip or narrow grip.

The wider the grip the more of your back/shoulder area you use. The more narrow, the more of your bicep/shoulder area you use.

I use static holds for pullups. I love those and they really have helped my back overall.

just lift yourself into the top position and then hold it for 30 seconds or as long as you can. then slowly lower yourself at the end.

I incorporated those into my workouts 6 months ago b/c of what I read in Arnold's book. He said he couldn't get his back to grow anymore, so he incorporated wide grip pullups and increased 4" within a month. Been doing them ever since. You can do them in conjunction w/ behind the head lat pull downs and barbell lat raises.
Oh and I'm 5'9" 162lbs, i usually do 3 sets in the neighborhood of 20, 15, 12. Personal best was 26. I go deep ever rep too, all the way out and back up.

Nothing like 'em. Gotta go wide and when they get easier you gotta weght yourself. Last night happend to be back night. I had just done my 3rd set of 10 and some punk came up so he could show me up( he saw me struggleing with the last couple) He used a close underhanded grip where as I was wide (about 2.5-3 feet). He did a few and dropped looking around like a bad ass. His buddy said to him try doing some wide over hands like I was doing. He could sqeeze out but 2.

LOL, what a loser. I hate people that try to show others up in the gym; competitiveness is one thing, but behaving like an ass is a different kettle of fish. Everyone has to start somewhere and as Shibby (or someone else....) says "check your ego at the door!"

i do wide, 3-4 sets trying to increase my total reps by 1 or 2 each week. that means if i do four sets of 8 one week (total = 32), i'll try to pull about 33-34 reps the next week... i'm currently at 32 reps, but when i started i was at like 18-20 reps total.

just 2 or 3 because you have to remember static and negative strength makes a deeper inroad into your revcovery than positive strength.
