  • Leg Presses. How low to go?

Question concerning leg presses. I see people going all the way down and some people going only partially. Me being a tall guy, 6 feet to be exact, I feel as if it is more difficult for me to go all the way down with my legs being long. I came across this video on Kevin Levrone doing them. Its on 8:10 that he is doing leg presses, but only goes partially.

I cant go all the way down down nor do them partially. I do them as far as I can reach down. Just wanted to know on how low to go without inhibting gains or doing them wrong.

During leg presses you should be able to touch your thighs to your chest if you can't try ti adjust the back rest of the leg press machine, I train guys as tall as 6'3" and they all are able to come down as low as possible. Oh also where you place your feet is important too.

Yup thats how I do mine. I go all the way down as to where my thigh touches chest and then up.

I see alot of guys slightly bend their legs and thats it. I always wondered the proper form though.

Its all good for me then. Since Im tall and the machines we got at the gym are old school unadjustable type. I gotta work with what I got there.

I'll post some pic or video this week to show u all if im doing them right.

I am 6ft and when I do leg presses, I have my knees touch my chest.

as soon as my thigh touches chest, i press up.

My last best was 24 plates (1080lbs), repping 8-10 reps. But you always have your haters in gym saying stuff like, "you aint doing them right" or "why do you lift like that, you are not going to grow". Thats why I asked this question. So far so good, my form is right.

foot placement makes a difference also, if you point your toes outward then your knees will come down round your torso and won't hit the buffers as early as toes pointed straight up and legs together.

i like the dudes that put 1000 lbs on it and barely move it, or push with their hands on knees.
good rule of thumb - the right form is usually the most strenuous.

Lol, I put my hands on my thighs put they are only there because my back feels more comfortable, and i always think i bet everbody thinks im pushing with my hands lol

But, serioulsy im 6'3" and i put my thighs right on my chest. Fold up like a lawn chair is what people told me

On a side not I heard that being taller allows you to do more weight on the leg press because of leverage?

I keep my feet using a shoulder width range. Since my shoulders are a bit wide, I go a little wide.

Yeah seen those before. Last time some old guy was talking shit when I was lifting my usual weigh, that “why is it that people lift a lot”, etc. etc…. Well this guy is one of those who barely move the weight as you describe it.

I haven’t bought those knee straps or the tape to hold them in place. I do place my hands or forearms in knees but only for support. Just in case my legs shake or something but not to push weight. I guess to hold them in place

                        i dont do leg presses.

squats and hack squats for me.

to me, leg press is more of a "show off machine" then a muscle stimulator.

I tend to not do them either since squats tend to hit my quads plenty. When I do them though I go to the point right before my lower back is going to lift off the pad.
