I am a scientist first and foremost. I believe what is proven to me by concrete data /measurement.

It has been proven many times over that as little as two drinks inside one hour can reduce reaction times in the average sized human. You might not even FEEL two drinks but your reaction time is diminished. What happens when that random bad driver (maybe a distracted parent dealing with their kids) pulls out in front of you? Normally, perhaps you would have just enough time to slam on the brakes and avoid an accident but those two drinks just shaved a few seconds off your reaction time and, well, the rest is tragic history. What would you say to a mother whose kids you just killed?

My wife was on a jury a few years ago in a trial where a repeat DUI (who had his liscense revoked due to previous DUI) ran a stop sign and slammed into a car carrying a woman, did a sort of funky half circle and hit a minivan behind the car carrying a father and 4 yr old daughter. The woman in the first car was the mother; she was killed. The father survived (badly injured) and the 4 yr old was literally torn in half. The jury convicted the guy with murder (and rightly so in my opinion). Anyway, my point is, tell that father who lost his wife and daughter that day due to a drunk driver that drunk driving is "blown out of proportion". I bet he would disagree.

I don't even know anyone who hasn't been affected by drunk driving sometime in their life. My best friend in Maine was hit head on by one and nearly killed. My grandfather was hit by one in Illinois and broke his back. Drunk driving is an enormous problem; I only wish the police would catch more of them before they hurt or kill someone I love.

As for minorities. I agree with bouncer here I think. I believe the problem lies in a culture that does not prize education and learning as highly as some others. That along with a mindset where they are raised to believe the world OWES them something for past wrongs done their ancestors contributes to people who are less able and less willing to contribute meaningfully to society. This, of course, is not the case with ALL black people but I think it is the case with many. One of my best friends is a black guy and he tells me the same thing. He respects Bill Cosby for telling it like it is. How can someone contribute to society when society can't even understand them when they talk? How successful do you think someone will be in a job interview if they talk and dress like Snoop Doggy?

Look at minorities that do prize education like Asians and Jewish people. They have comparitively less crime and poverty then even the white majority, as well as an average IQ a full standard deviation above the average in America (train your mind and it responds just like a muscle; it grows in capability). The main reason for this, IMO, is that most Asian and Jewish families stress education and give their children incentives to study hard and make something of themselves. Scholars are the most highly regarded members of Asian and Jewish communities.

Different ethnic backgrounds do act differently. I remember when I first made friends with an Italian family, I couldn't understand why they were always yelling at eachother. LOL Other nationalities are similar, and yes, black people tend to be louder than most.

As for minorities not improving their lives, there are a lot of things that come into play. Growing up you have to be street wise just to survive. It doesn't just stay on the street either. Kids in classes continue this mentality instead of focussing on their school work. It's a matter of survival for them. They earn the "respect" of their peers by being tough, not by excelling in education. Without a good education it's difficult to improve the quality of life. Parents aren't motivated to change either, they are content living as they do and this is passed down onto their children. Without motivation, there is no desire for change. Not having much money, the kids are left to their own instead of going to organized events like being involved in a sports team, taking martial arts classes, etc. They wind up hanging out on the street and being unproductive which eventually leads to them getting into trouble. I don't know if it's just a lack of education or a desire to be loved, but minority women also tend to have more kids at a younger age which only increases the problem. It's a vicious cycle.

:agree: If and when they break the cycle they are looked at differently by their own race!

So are you saying they deserve something because of this? The Native Americans were and still are held down more than the blacks. As a matter of fact during the time that the blacks were counted as property (whole human beings), indians were only counted as fractions of human beings. I don't see them causing all the human right issues and retribution issues that the blacks are. I'm not racist but I am very opinionated about this issue and statistics and actions speak for themselves. I live in a nice neighborhood, but if you go 10 minutes in either direction, you should be cautious at night and it's not because I'm worried about a "white" man stealing my sneakers. I cannot stand it, anytime something happens against a black, it's not because they were jacked up on drugs and attacking someone, it's because they were black and they were singled out.

I feel so bad for the black americans taking advantage of the opportunites and making something of themselves because they have to deal with all the bullshit that the ignorant members of their community create. I had a brilliant black teacher for history class and I could see the look of disgust and disappointment when a young, black, thug wannabe would be in class acting like an ass and like the teacher owed him special treatment because they were "brothers."

Actually there is one here where I live. It's just outside of the city limits. It was a underprivlaged housing development built about 10 years ago and it is predominantly black. These people keep it very nice and if someone tries to fuck it up they kick em out.

Plus successful minorites are sometimes looke down upon BY THEIR OWN RACES, as if they gave in to the "white" culutre by becoming successful. Its so messed up.
I get this alot, since I'm one of extremely few in my highschool who went and finished college.. Yeah, I sold "something" and bought a BMW, but I also had 2 jobs and went to school in the daytime.. When I talk to friends sometimes, they get all, "You ain't street, dawg!" 'cause I choose to not speak in slang..

So I do agree with this statement on how when minorities become successful we get looked down on, 'cause I deal with that everyday..

What I was saying wasn't racist. Bouncer asked why we think that there is more violence and police drama within the african-american race... I honestly believe in what I had said.

There are areas like this around, they can be found outside of the innermost urban areas, barely suburban.. I've lived in afew spots like that, might be expensive for some..

blm, I am not saying that the african-americans in the US deserve something. But, you have to think... all these thousands of people who live here in the US and for years they can't get educated, and they can't afford college... that's why they are they way they are. You can't be a Dr. or a lawyer and not attend college. That's why there are so few who CAN end up with a better life. That's why there is more problems with voilence, drugs and guns.

Nonsense, they have just as much availability to resources as the rest of us commoners, if not more these days (the upper class is in a whole other category). They are not African either, I have met very few blacks from Africa. Their ancestors may have been, but not them. They are the way they are because they choose to be. Granted, a "child" does not choose to be born in the ghetto etc...but once they are old enough to make their own choices, they have damn near endless opportunities to achieve a better status in life. Of course it's not easy. Being succesful isn't easy for anyone (except Bouncer, lol) but the resources are there. Nobody owes them shit. PERIOD!

Since there are few blacks here, our underprivileged housing are full of "white trash"... and they don't keep their homes up any better. I think that's more a social class problem than a race.... just happens that in many cities, the lower classes are predominantly black.

I'm not saying they don't have resources. But they come from intercity schools which aren't that great. They don't choose opportunities because no one is pushing them to. They come from poverty-stricken areas.

BLM, they are born with a lot of strikes against them. And again, no one does owe them anything, but without a good support system from thier own family, they do have a much harder time making a better life for themselves.
