I am a scientist first and foremost. I believe what is proven to me by concrete data /measurement.
It has been proven many times over that as little as two drinks inside one hour can reduce reaction times in the average sized human. You might not even FEEL two drinks but your reaction time is diminished. What happens when that random bad driver (maybe a distracted parent dealing with their kids) pulls out in front of you? Normally, perhaps you would have just enough time to slam on the brakes and avoid an accident but those two drinks just shaved a few seconds off your reaction time and, well, the rest is tragic history. What would you say to a mother whose kids you just killed?
My wife was on a jury a few years ago in a trial where a repeat DUI (who had his liscense revoked due to previous DUI) ran a stop sign and slammed into a car carrying a woman, did a sort of funky half circle and hit a minivan behind the car carrying a father and 4 yr old daughter. The woman in the first car was the mother; she was killed. The father survived (badly injured) and the 4 yr old was literally torn in half. The jury convicted the guy with murder (and rightly so in my opinion). Anyway, my point is, tell that father who lost his wife and daughter that day due to a drunk driver that drunk driving is "blown out of proportion". I bet he would disagree.
I don't even know anyone who hasn't been affected by drunk driving sometime in their life. My best friend in Maine was hit head on by one and nearly killed. My grandfather was hit by one in Illinois and broke his back. Drunk driving is an enormous problem; I only wish the police would catch more of them before they hurt or kill someone I love.
As for minorities. I agree with bouncer here I think. I believe the problem lies in a culture that does not prize education and learning as highly as some others. That along with a mindset where they are raised to believe the world OWES them something for past wrongs done their ancestors contributes to people who are less able and less willing to contribute meaningfully to society. This, of course, is not the case with ALL black people but I think it is the case with many. One of my best friends is a black guy and he tells me the same thing. He respects Bill Cosby for telling it like it is. How can someone contribute to society when society can't even understand them when they talk? How successful do you think someone will be in a job interview if they talk and dress like Snoop Doggy?
Look at minorities that do prize education like Asians and Jewish people. They have comparitively less crime and poverty then even the white majority, as well as an average IQ a full standard deviation above the average in America (train your mind and it responds just like a muscle; it grows in capability). The main reason for this, IMO, is that most Asian and Jewish families stress education and give their children incentives to study hard and make something of themselves. Scholars are the most highly regarded members of Asian and Jewish communities.
