Because even though most assaults with a firearm happen at contact distance the attacker still manages to miss completely or only cause scant injuries. I've seen far more superficial gunshot wounds than fatal ones.

Knife wounds on the other hand are nasty, damaging and often take longer to heal. While a gun takes at least some small degree of training in order to be accurate any human with a knife can and will ruin your day.

If you get in a gun fight you MIGHT get shot, but get in a knife fight and you WILL get cut.

How about with intruders? That would be my main concern.

I can't stress this enough, if you are in a knife fight you WILL get hurt or do damage to the other person, if you get in a shootout their is a good chance that neither one of you is a cold stone killer and will most likely just let the addrenaline push you to do stupid shit (ie remain in the fight, just not use basic tactics to prevent harm to the both of you). To take a knife at someone it becomes very personal, and it's more thank likely more a "hit" mentality. The bottom line is it's a choice you make, people will hate it, people will agree with it, but it's still your choice. Personally the whole point of this thread was to see the tragedy of someone going absolutely delusional and now it's about gun laws .. if you don't believe in them/consider you dont need one, I am glad for you. But if it's a matter of safety, I'll keep a knife and a gun. But jesus.. just read the link bounce posted .. don't let guns take over what some fucked up brain started .. remember that no glock pulls it's own trigger, there was a brain behind this shooting.
