I didn't read any of you guys banter, but this is how I have gone to specialists, I call up the specialist, get an appointment, then I call my primary care say what specialist I am going to and I need a referral, they write the referral. that is what I did for my deviated septum, my nose needing to be cotterized, and my fractured calcaneus. It all depends on your HMO. With mine I do not need a referral so I can call around, which FB was right about. But you guys are both right about the referral thing.
